Lisa was welcomed with southern hospitality at Congregation EmanuEl Houston! It was a full weekend of song and prayer where Lisa was joined by the Shabbatones, the TE Choir, Cantor Mark Perman and members of the TEYouth Choir to present Soulful Shabbat Ruach! Shabbat morning featured Yoga Shalom attended by a wide variety of practitioners at many levels of ability. The weekend rounded out with an afternoon concert "My Songs for the Jews of Cuba" which tells Lisa's story of her many missions to Cuba through slides, narration and songs. Many thanks to friends and colleagues Rabbi Marc Disick, Rabbi Pam Silk and Cantor Mark Perman for making the weekend possible as well as Barbara Loeser, Anne Frohbeieter, Julie Sachs for their hospitality. Thanks to Program director Jason Plotkin for making all the details come together. It was truly an honor to make music together and to be part of the Congregational EmanuEl community.
What do you get when you cross Yoga with Jews? A Jewgafest that brings the community together with many varieties of Yoga, meditation, chanting and prayer. for a day of renewal and recharging of the spirit. It was an exciting day packed with Yoga Shalom classes, Mending Hearts Making Peace Drumming circles and new friends. Thank you to Howie Shareff and the folks at Beth Meyer Synagogue in Raleigh SC for putting together the event!
Connecting Jewish Women In Charleston SC!
The Jewish Federation of Charleston hosted a most impressive day of presentations at the Connecting Jewish Women's Conference. Thank you to Carol Berlin, Jennifer Schager for including me and Yoga Shalom in the festivities!
TBK Rochester Rockin' Retreat
Lisa was honored to lead the 17th Annual Temple B'rith Kodesh Sisterhood Retreat in Rochester, NY. We began Friday afternoon with mixers and sharing our favorite childhood memories of food around the Shabbos table and continued with Kabbalat Shabbat services, and a drumming empowerment workshop. Saturday included Shabbat Morning services and Torah study, Yoga Shalom and Havdalah. The retreat was filled love, with stories and with friendship. Afterward Lisa hopped over to the beautiful TBK Building where Rabbi Kelly Levy and Cantorial Soloist Keri Berger hosted her for a concert and Havdalah service led with the Youth Group. What a blessing it was to meet all of these very special people to be part of this spiritually uplifting weekend.
Summer Tour 2014
Stops for summer tour 2014 included Kabbalat Shabbat at Centre Maayan, Paris, Nava Tehilah and Hebrew Union College, JIR in the holy city of Jerusalem and the Lincolnshire Jewish Community in Lincoln, UK. A highlight was the morning service at the Western Wall of the Kotel where Lisa was invited to lead services for Women of the Wall and the American Conference of Cantors and Guild of Temple Musicians Conference. Anat Hoffman and members of the WOW were present to join our group in a joyous celebration of freedom of prayer which Anat and her courageous women have been working toward for 25 years. Many blessings and thanks for the special enduring relationships and connections that will surely last a lifetime.
Temple Beth-El Providence was welcoming and wonderful as Lisa presented a weekend of events including Soulful Shabbat, Yoga Shalom and My Songs for the Jews of Cuba. Many thanks to Cantor Judy Seplowin and everyone who made the weekend such a smashing success. Sweet memories and very special people in a very special southern New England city!
Fabulous Florence and Charleston South Carolina
Congregation Beth Israel in Florence SC proved to be a warm and welcoming place for Lisa to share a weekend of her Soulful Shabbat, Yoga Shalom and Broadway Show. Dyan and Alex Cohen put the weekend together and made everything so special. Although a small congregation the community is filled with vibrancy and history which filled every moment with poignancy and love. Next Lisa headed to Charleston SC and the historic KKBE Congregation for a Choral Workshop. Many thanks to Heidi Kunitz-Levy for putting together a spectacular afternoon of music and friendship.
Florida Tour 2014
Beautiful people, beautiful weather and many soulful moments of sharing made Lisa's 2014 Florida tour memorable. It included stops at Temple Judea of Coral Gables, Beth Am and Beit Breira Samu-el in Miami, Kol Ami Emanu-el In Plantation and Temple Israel of Brevard in Melbourne. Kudos to colleagues and friends who made everything possible and to ALL of the choirs, bands, practitioners, friends and congregants who participated with full hearts. MLK 2014 Makes Community Happen
Spirits soared as Cantor Lisa joined with Jazz Vocalist Lori Williams and the Wilson Sr. High School Choir, Washington Revel Jubilee Voices, Tony and DeJuana Small, Gospel superstar Rasheda Jolley, members of the Shir Shalom, TSYouth and Teen Choirs and our own Ruach Band to join our community in song and prayer. Pastor Joe Daniels brought his choir and band under the direction of Curtis Harrington to join in the Shabbat observance and featured the music from Lisa's Soulful Shabbat Ruach Service. Thank you to the Men of Reform Judaism (MRJ) Congregational Interfaith Mini-Grant Program made possible by funding of the Jewish Chautauqua Society, MRJ’s interfaith education project.
Transformational OHALAH 2014
The experience of being with colleagues and friends at the 2014 OHALAH Conference in Broomfield CO was overwhelming. From induction into the Aleph Rabbinic Pastoral Program, words of wisdom from Reb Zalman, to inspirational worship and thought provoking workshops, every moment was transformative, holy and memorable. Thank you to those who rose before sunrise to share Yoga Shalom Shacharit.
The URJ Biennial was packed with highlights including connecting with old friends and making new ones. Lisa shared Yoga Shalom with both URJ and WRJ attendees, performed on the BAM stage with friends Mikey Pauker, Mattan Klein and amazing artists Sam Glaser, Todd Herzog and Julie Silver from the Sowing Seeds CD as well as sharing a song at the ARZA Mattan Klein Gas Lamp late night session. The fun continued when Lisa's songs Hallelu-Behold How Good and Grant Peace were featured at the Transcontinental Choral Workshop, and she did two book signings, one for the WRJ Centennial Book where four of her poems appear and one for Yoga Shalom, which was featured at the URJ Bookstore. The highlight of the Biennial was the Friday Night Shabbat Song Session sharing the stage with the best and brightest of our Reform movement. Everyone who attended the Conference received a FREE copy of the collaborative CD Sowing Seeds which got a lot of buzz as did the new Yoga Shalom Leaders Guide. Until Orlando, blessings to one and all for a spectacular Biennial.
Julie Silver Packs the Pews
Lisa was joined by the great singer songwriter Julie Silver this past Shabbat as Julie inspired members of the TSYouth, Ruach Teen and Shir Shalom Adult Choirs along with a packed house at Temple Shalom! Thanks Julie for making our prayers and our worship so memorable and so special.
Finally, the long wait is over, after almost two years of work. Lisa's newest release "Sowing Seeds" features the hip Israeli Jazz Band Seeds of Sun led by Mattan Klein, who turned some of her old hits and new favorites into jazz covers. Guests on the album include: Hannah Spiro, Sam Glaser, Julie Silver, Todd Herzog, Lori Williams, Doug Cotler, Peri Smilow, Gerard Edery, Noah Aronson and Mikey Pauker, who interpreted the tunes and turned them into instant classics. Dave Nachmanoff is featured on guitars and backup vocals courtesy of some very dedicated Youth and Teen Choir singers of Temple Shalom. This is a true collaborative effort and a perfect gift for the holidays.
Aleph KALLAH 2013
Lisa was honored to attend her first ever Aleph KALLAH in Rindge New Hampshire where she shared Yoga Shalom to full classes in the Davennen program, performed a few songs in the Coffee House show and presented The Jewish Gospel Experience Concert to a standing room only crowd! The outpouring of love and support was infectious as fellow attendees shared their knowledge, spirits and voices throughout the week. Blessings and thanks to teachers, presenters, performers and staff who gave their energies to created a spiritual oasis for all.
WCN Telling our Stories Singing our Songs
It was an emotional time with very special people at the recent WCN Conference at Temple Beth Emet in Ann Arbor MI. Many thanks to Annie Rose, Chair of the Conference as well as her fabulous team of worker bees. The Conference was filled with inspiring moments, great learning and time to enjoy one another's company. We are filled to overflowing until next year at Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase, MD!
